The Sacramento Kings and Los Angeles Clippers held preliminary talks on a trade package built around DeMar DeRozan before the Clippers’ recent turnaround, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.

Scotto reported that early discussions featured Sacramento sending DeRozan and guard Keon Ellis to Los Angeles. In return, the framework had the Clippers moving forward John Collins plus a small additional salary piece to the Kings.

A trade to Southern California would have marked a homecoming for DeRozan, a Los Angeles native. Sources indicated the veteran wing would have been open to the move, though he is said to be comfortable with his current situation in Northern California.

The conversations occurred prior to the Clippers’ surge in form. Los Angeles has won 11 of its last 13 games, climbing to 17-23 and pulling even with the Memphis Grizzlies for 10th place in the Western Conference. With the team back in playoff contention, league observers believe any urgency to overhaul the roster has cooled.

No further talks between the teams have been reported since the Clippers’ run of success.
