Charlotte’s battle for minutes at center has a new contender. Rookie Ryan Kalkbrenner, selected 34th overall in June, is impressing coaches during the Hornets’ first week of training camp.

“His basketball IQ, competitiveness and willingness to keep things simple really stand out,” head coach Charles Lee said. “He’s in the right spots because he’ll do whatever it takes to help his teammates.”

The former Creighton standout said the transition has been smooth. “I couldn’t be happier with this group,” Kalkbrenner noted. “I don’t always know what I’m doing yet, but everyone’s been helpful, and I’m feeling more comfortable every day.”

High expectations for Brandon Miller

Across the frontcourt, forward Brandon Miller enters his third season healthy after missing significant time with a wrist injury last year. Executive vice president of basketball operations Jeff Peterson called the 22-year-old “a future All-Star” and even a potential Hall of Famer. “I don’t want to put a ceiling on him,” Peterson told the Charlotte Observer. “He knows the expectations—and he has the same expectations for himself.”

Jovic rejects “injury-prone” label

In Miami, Nikola Jovic has played exactly 46 games in each of his first two seasons and recently secured a four-year extension. The 22-year-old forward dismissed concerns about durability after dealing with back, hamstring, ankle, hand and nasal issues. “I broke my foot stepping on someone and my nose when someone elbowed me,” Jovic said. “I can’t tell my bone not to break. I’m preparing my body to play as many games as I can.”

Middleton embraces mentor role in Washington

Veteran wing Khris Middleton stands out on a rebuilding Wizards roster loaded with young players. The three-time All-Star said he intends to guide without overstepping. “These guys are eager to play, and that energy is contagious,” Middleton explained. “I want to help them find their own path the same way my vets helped me.”
