Jordan Ott says defensive lapses putting Suns at risk as postseason nears

Phoenix Suns head coach Jordan Ott acknowledged Thursday that repeated defensive miscues are starting to undermine the team’s otherwise solid season just weeks before the NBA postseason.

Speaking after a loss to the Charlotte Hornets, Ott highlighted breakdowns that allowed Charlotte’s smaller lineups to exploit the middle of the floor.

“What hurt us was the middle pick-and-roll, small-small pick-and-roll,” Ott told reporters. “That’s two smalls, and they were able to beat us off the bounce and get to the rim.”

Ott, who has pushed for a more physical identity all year, said the coaching staff is open to any adjustment necessary to shore up the defense. “Everything is on the table,” he said. “We’re trying to figure this thing out on the fly. We’ve got to expedite it. There’s no excuse.”

The Suns have leaned heavily on an offense powered by Devin Booker and Jalen Green, while veterans such as Dillon Brooks have tried to set a tougher tone on the other end. With a potential play-in tournament berth looming, Ott stressed that consistent stops will be crucial.
