New York Knicks guard Jordan Clarkson faces the Utah Jazz tonight, marking his first matchup against the club where he captured the 2020-21 Sixth Man of the Year award. Although his minutes have fluctuated since signing with New York, the 33-year-old said he is simply eager to experience “the happiness and joy” of stepping back into Salt Lake City.
“I ain’t coming in expecting anything, honestly,” Clarkson told reporters. “A lot of people made expectations on my arrival and what I can do and what I’ve done my whole career. I just knew one goal … and that’s to win.” He added that the Knicks were transparent about his role before he agreed to the deal.
Clarkson described Utah as “a home for me,” praising the organization, coaching staff and city. “All I had was love there,” he said, noting he will try to keep his emotions in check during the reunion.
Eyes on Asia Cup and Olympic push
In a separate conversation with Essentially Sports, Clarkson emphasized his intention to lead Team Philippines at this summer’s FIBA Asia Cup. Missing out on the Olympics and falling short of expectations at the recent World Cup continue to motivate him, he said.
“Reaching the goal of having a chance to make the Olympics, I think, is a big thing for me and to represent the country,” Clarkson explained. He believes the national squad “has a good shot” at qualifying for the next Games, provided the coaching staff identifies the right combinations. “We got a lot of talent on the team, from older dudes to younger dudes as well,” he added.
The veteran guard hopes to be registered as a naturalized player, which would give the program additional roster flexibility. Clarkson also cited the growing number of NBA players with Filipino roots—Jalen Green (Suns), Dylan Harper (Spurs) and Jared McCain (Thunder)—as proof the pipeline is strengthening, saying he aims to inspire that next generation.
The Knicks-Jazz game tips off tonight in Salt Lake City.
