Washington, D.C., Aug. 19, 2025 — Point guard John Wall, the top selection in the 2010 NBA Draft and a five-time All-Star, revealed today he is retiring from professional basketball. The 34-year-old made the announcement through a video posted on Instagram, saying he is “stepping off the court, but not away from the game.”
Wall’s message, delivered over a montage of career highlights, thanked family, teammates, coaches and fans. “I gave this game everything I had, from Raleigh to Kentucky to the league,” he said, adding that every jersey he wore “was about representing something bigger.”
Ten Seasons in Washington
Selected first overall by the Washington Wizards after one collegiate season at Kentucky in which he captured SEC Player of the Year honors, Wall became the franchise’s full-time starting point guard almost immediately. He finished second in Rookie of the Year voting and earned five consecutive All-Star selections from 2014 through 2018. His résumé in Washington also includes an All-Defensive Team nod in 2015 and All-NBA Third Team recognition, along with MVP votes, in 2017.
Injuries and Later Stops
A series of leg injuries, highlighted by a torn Achilles tendon, slowed Wall in his later Wizards years. He was traded to Houston in the 2020 offseason, appeared in 40 games for the Rockets, then sat out the following season by mutual agreement. His final NBA action came with the Los Angeles Clippers in 2022-23, when he played 34 games.
Career Numbers
Across 647 regular-season contests — 604 of them starts — Wall averaged 18.7 points, 8.9 assists and 4.2 rebounds in 34.9 minutes while shooting 43.0 percent from the field, 32.2 percent from three-point range and 77.6 percent at the line.
As recently as December 2024, reports indicated Wall was still pursuing an NBA comeback. With no roster spot materializing last season, the veteran, who turns 35 next month, decided to conclude his 13-year career.
Following today’s announcement, the Wizards posted their own tribute on social media, calling Wall “one of our franchise all-time greats.”
