PHILADELPHIA — The 76ers have ruled out center Joel Embiid for the team’s next three contests after an MRI on Saturday morning detected a strained right oblique, the club announced.
The reigning MVP will sit out Sunday’s matchup in Boston and home games against San Antonio on Tuesday and Utah on Wednesday. Philadelphia said Embiid will be re-evaluated following the mid-week back-to-back.
Embiid first reported discomfort in his midsection during Thursday’s victory over Miami. He briefly headed to the locker room after taking an inadvertent hit from Kelel Ware but returned to drill a crucial three-pointer in the final minute. Head coach Nick Nurse had no postgame update, and Embiid left before the locker room opened to reporters.
The 30-year-old did not participate in Saturday’s practice, prompting the imaging that confirmed the injury.
Embiid had appeared in two games this week after missing time since February 7 because of knee and shin issues. He has played in 33 of Philadelphia’s 59 games, averaging 26.6 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 31.2 minutes while shooting 49.5 percent from the field, 31.8 percent from three and 85.8 percent at the foul line.
