During an appearance on ESPN’s First Take on Tuesday, Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum said he has not ruled out playing later in the 2025/26 NBA season as he recovers from a torn Achilles.
“I haven’t said I’m not playing this season,” Tatum told host Stephen A. Smith, emphasizing that his focus remains on a full, unrushed recovery. The 27-year-old star undergoes rehab six days a week following surgery to repair his left Achilles on May 13.
An Achilles tear generally sidelines players for about a year, yet the Celtics have not officially declared Tatum out for the season. The stance differs from the Indiana Pacers, who have already ruled guard Tyrese Haliburton—injured on June 22—out for the entire campaign.
Encouraging reports have emerged about Tatum’s progress. Dr. Martin O’Malley, the orthopedic surgeon who performed the procedure, told People that Tatum’s calf strength is exceptional. “At six or eight weeks he was doing double heel rises,” O’Malley said, adding that he does not anticipate the usual strength loss associated with the injury.
The Celtics’ medical staff will determine Tatum’s availability, a decision that could hinge on how the team performs without its leading scorer. If Boston hovers around or below .500 after the All-Star break, the organization may decide there is no need to accelerate his return.
In the meantime, Tatum plans to remain close to the roster. “I’m going to be at practices and go to games and travel,” he told People. “Feeling like I’m a part of the team will help me out.”
