The Dallas Mavericks have broadened their general-manager search, adding head coach Jason Kidd and Cleveland Cavaliers president of basketball operations Koby Altman to a growing list of possibilities, league sources told Sports Illustrated.
Owner Patrick Dumont is said to have first targeted high-profile executives such as Sam Presti (Oklahoma City Thunder), Tim Connelly (Minnesota Timberwolves) and Brad Stevens (Boston Celtics). Only Connelly is viewed as remotely attainable, according to earlier reports.
Kidd, who guided Dallas to the Western Conference semifinals last season, is “very well liked by ownership,” Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix said on FanDuel’s Run It Back. However, the organization values continuity on the bench as it enters rising star Cooper Flagg’s second NBA season, making Kidd’s transition to the front office a complicated proposition.
Altman, under contract with Cleveland through 2028, is another name loosely connected to the vacancy. In addition, former Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers—now an executive with Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment—has been mentioned, though his availability is considered a long shot.
Interim co-GMs Matt Riccardi and Michael Finley remain candidates while the franchise weighs its options. “It’s the most important decision that the organization is going to make, so we are going to take our time and get it right,” Mavericks CEO Rick Welts told reporters, according to The Stein Line.
The search is still in its early stages, and no timetable for a final decision has been announced.
