The Memphis Grizzlies have ruled All-Star guard Ja Morant week-to-week with a sprained left ankle suffered during Sunday’s practice on October 6, a team spokesperson told Damichael Cole of The Memphis Commercial Appeal.
The injury is expected to sideline Morant for all five of Memphis’ preseason games and puts his status for the regular-season opener against the New Orleans Pelicans on October 22 in doubt.
Memphis entered training camp hoping for better health from the 26-year-old, who was limited to 50 games last season by several ailments, including recurring pain in his surgically repaired right shoulder. He also missed the final contest of the first-round playoff series against the Oklahoma City Thunder because of a hip injury.
Durability has been a recurring issue throughout Morant’s career. He played only nine games in the 2023-24 campaign due to the shoulder problem and has never appeared in more than 67 games, a mark set during his rookie year.
When available last season, Morant averaged 23.2 points, 7.3 assists and 4.1 rebounds in 30.4 minutes per game. His offensive role is expected to grow after Memphis traded longtime backcourt partner Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic during the offseason.
With Morant sidelined, Scotty Pippen Jr. is projected to step into the starting point guard role. Pippen started 21 games a season ago.
