The Memphis Grizzlies announced on November 17 that point guard Ja Morant has a Grade 1 strain of his right calf and will be reevaluated in two weeks.
Morant was injured on Saturday during the Grizzlies’ road game against the Cavaliers in Cleveland, leaving after just six minutes. An MRI confirmed the strain, according to the team’s public relations department.
The 26-year-old had already been managing right ankle soreness earlier in the season. Trade chatter intensified several weeks ago when Morant and head coach Tuomas Iisalo clashed over effort and substitution patterns during a loss to the Lakers. The guard served a one-game team suspension before returning to regular action.
The Minnesota Timberwolves are among the clubs reportedly monitoring Morant, who is in the third season of a five-year, $197.2 million extension. He is averaging 17.9 points—his lowest figure since his rookie campaign—and 7.6 assists.
Durability remains a concern for the former No. 2 overall pick. Morant has not appeared in more than 61 games in any of the past four seasons. He served an NBA suspension in 2023/24, saw action in only nine games before shoulder surgery that year, and was limited to 50 games last season.
Based on the two-week timetable, Morant will miss at least eight games, starting with Tuesday’s nationally televised matchup against San Antonio. Fellow guard Ty Jerome is also recovering from a calf injury.
