Fort Lauderdale, Fla. — The Internal Revenue Service has discharged an $8.2 million federal tax lien against Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, according to Broward County clerk records reviewed by ESPN.
The lien release was recorded on Oct. 29, one day after ESPN first revealed the lien’s existence and six days after Rozier was arrested on federal charges linked to an alleged gambling scheme. Prosecutors allege Rozier conspired to commit wire fraud and money laundering by passing along nonpublic injury information that was ultimately sold to bettors.
Attorney Jim Trusty, who represents Rozier, initially told ESPN his client owed roughly $9,000 in unpaid taxes before revising the figure to $3,000, attributing the lien to an electronic filing error. The official release document filed Nov. 20 lists the resolved balance as exactly $8,218,211.
“Once the accountant clarified the situation with the IRS, Terry was found to owe only $3,000 in unpaid taxes for 2021,” Trusty said in October, adding that the amount had been paid. He did not supply proof of payment and did not respond to follow-up questions on Monday.
IRS representatives declined to comment, citing taxpayer-privacy statutes. Generally, the agency has 30 days to remove a lien after settling a debt.
The original lien, issued in November 2023, was filed in Broward County, where Rozier purchased property in 2021. Tax professional Tom O’Saben of the National Association of Tax Professionals noted that failed electronic filings typically trigger rapid alerts, suggesting Rozier or his advisers likely knew of any problem well before the lien appeared.
Rozier is scheduled to be arraigned on Dec. 8 in U.S. District Court in Brooklyn. Trusty has said the 30-year-old guard is not guilty of the federal charges.
