The opening week of NBA training camps has produced encouraging health news for several key players and early hints of how three franchises may reshape their rotations.

Spurs

Guard Devin Vassell reported to camp pain-free after consecutive off-seasons dealing with knee and foot issues. Speaking to local reporters, the 24-year-old said completing two-a-day workouts for the first time in years has boosted his strength, conditioning and on-court rhythm. Vassell, who averaged 18.1 points last season, set a personal goal of appearing in all 82 games; his career high is 71 in 2021-22.

Meanwhile, top pick Victor Wembanyama spent the summer recovering from a blood clot that ended his 2024-25 campaign. The 7-4 forward described the setback as potentially beneficial and has expanded his perimeter responsibilities in camp, operating more as a creator on the wing.

Lakers

New head coach JJ Redick said guard Marcus Smart took part in live drills Tuesday after being limited by Achilles tendinopathy. Forward Jarred Vanderbilt praised Smart’s defensive leadership, calling his combination of physicality and vocal communication a valuable addition.

Cavaliers

Cleveland acquired forward De’Andre Hunter at last season’s trade deadline, and head coach Kenny Atkinson is preparing to insert the 6-foot-8 wing into the starting lineup. Hunter scored 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting in his first preseason outing, prompting teammate Larry Nance Jr. to compare his performance to Kawhi Leonard. Hunter, a 2024-25 Sixth Man of the Year candidate before the trade, said an offseason of work has boosted his confidence as he targets a larger role alongside Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen.

The Spurs, Lakers and Cavaliers continue preseason play later this week as rosters and rotations take clearer shape ahead of opening night.
