Mathurin Nears Return for Pacers; Latest on Green, Jerome and Cunningham
Indiana listed Bennedict Mathurin as questionable for Tuesday’s matchup with Atlanta, signaling the high-scoring wing could play for the first time in nearly three weeks.
Mathurin, 21, has been sidelined for the past 11 games after spraining his right thumb during the Jan. 2 win over San Antonio. The second-year guard originally attempted to continue playing but was ultimately shut down to allow the injury to heal. Earlier this season he also missed 11 of Indiana’s first 13 contests with a big-toe sprain.
Despite the interruptions, Mathurin is averaging a career-best 17.8 points, ranking second on the team behind Pascal Siakam and just ahead of Andrew Nembhard (17.7).
Additional Injury Updates
Jalen Green, Rockets: An MRI conducted after the guard exited Friday’s game against Phoenix did not reveal any new damage, head coach Jordan Ott said. Green, who has battled a hamstring issue and twice left games shortly after returning, is listed as day-to-day.
Ty Jerome, Grizzlies: Head coach Tuomas Iisalo noted that Jerome has advanced to full five-on-five work and could debut within the next one to two weeks. The 27-year-old signed a three-year contract with Memphis last summer after averaging 12.5 points and 3.4 assists in 19.9 minutes off the bench for Cleveland, finishing third in last season’s Sixth Man of the Year voting.
Cade Cunningham, Pistons: The third-year guard is managing pain in his shooting-hand wrist while continuing to play. Cunningham said the injury, sustained on Jan. 4 at Cleveland and aggravated the following night against New York, has improved; he reported feeling “great” before Sunday’s game versus Sacramento. Head coach JB Bickerstaff acknowledged the challenge of shooting with a sore wrist but expects time to help.
