Dallas — A dramatic finish on Thursday night showcased two rookies in record-setting form, with the Charlotte Hornets escaping the Dallas Mavericks 123-121.
Mavericks forward Cooper Flagg, still in his teens, erupted for 49 points on 20-of-29 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds. The total broke the NBA’s single-game scoring record for a teenager, surpassing Cliff Robinson’s 1980 mark.
Flagg’s effort was overshadowed by Hornets guard Kon Knueppel, who delivered a career-best 34 points, hit eight three-pointers and sank two free throws with 4.1 seconds remaining after stealing the ball from his former Duke roommate near midcourt.
Flagg nearly forced overtime, but his last-second jumper bounced off the back rim as time expired.
The matchup was the first NBA meeting between the ex-Blue Devil freshmen, hinting at a rivalry that could extend well beyond one memorable night in Dallas.
