CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Four members of the Charlotte Hornets’ 2025 draft class said they feel encouraged about the franchise’s direction and their own development as training camp approaches.
Lottery pick Kon Knueppel (No. 4 overall) joined first-rounder Liam McNeeley (No. 29) and second-round selections Sion James (No. 33) and Ryan Kalkbrenner (No. 34) in recent interviews with The Charlotte Observer to discuss their transition to the NBA.
Carrying Summer League momentum
Charlotte posted a 6-0 record and captured the Las Vegas Summer League title in July, with Knueppel earning Finals MVP honors. The former Duke wing said the group wants that success to spill into the regular season.
“I think it’s cool,” Knueppel said of the buzz surrounding the unbeaten run. “We’ve been having a good fall so far, playing a bunch with the guys, and hopefully we can carry that momentum toward the season.”
Early impressions of head coach Charles Lee
Knueppel praised new head coach Charles Lee for both his interpersonal skills and attention to detail. “It’s real easy to gravitate toward someone who is a good guy,” he said. “He takes the X’s and O’s really seriously, so I’m really excited.”
Rookies on fan support and culture shift
McNeeley noted Charlotte’s appetite for sports, adding, “It’s cool to give the fans something to hope for, something to root for.”
Kalkbrenner said the roster appears unified. “This year’s group is really committed to changing the culture and trying to win,” the 7-footer observed.
Areas for growth
James, asked which part of his game he most wants to sharpen, said improvement will come once NBA play begins. “I want to improve everything,” he admitted, acknowledging the ups and downs that accompany a rookie season.
The Hornets open training camp later this month before launching the 2025-26 campaign in October.
