CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Kon Knueppel’s standout first season reached another milestone Thursday night when the No. 4 overall pick sank four three-pointers to push his season total to a league-best 261, eclipsing Kemba Walker’s Hornets record of 260 set in 2018/19.
“I think maybe I’ve surpassed my expectations for myself a little bit,” Knueppel said after Charlotte’s home win over Phoenix. The 19-year-old, who entered camp uncertain about his role, has started every game and credited the Spectrum Center crowd for fueling his pursuit of the mark. “You definitely feel it,” he said. “It makes the ones that go in real, real sweet.”
More milestones and notes
Brandon Miller: The third-year forward made at least one three-pointer for the 54th straight game, breaking the club record previously shared by LaMelo Ball. Head coach Charles Lee praised Miller’s growth on both ends, noting the former No. 2 pick now regularly guards primary scorers while remaining a focal point offensively.
Coby White: Acquired at the February trade deadline, White poured in 19 points off the bench to spark a second-quarter comeback. The 24-year-old guard, on an expiring $12.9 million contract, continues to impress Lee with his versatility. “The fact that I can use him in a lot of different ways is really, really good,” the coach said.
Mark Williams: Suns center Mark Williams returned to Charlotte after missing 15 games with a left foot stress reaction. The former Hornet received a tribute video when he checked in midway through the first quarter. “I got some mixed emotions, but yeah it’s good to be back,” said Williams, who spent his first three NBA seasons in Charlotte before being traded twice.
The Hornets improved to 33-42 with the victory, while the Suns fell to 45-30.
