Charlotte Hornets head coach Charles Lee said guards/forwards Josh Green and Grant Williams will sit out the team’s training camp as they continue to recover from long-term injuries.

Lee told reporters on Sept. 20 that Green, who underwent surgery on his left shoulder in June, and Williams, rehabilitating a torn ACL and meniscus in his right knee suffered last November, are progressing but have no set return dates. According to Lee, Williams is slightly ahead in his recovery timeline.

Training camp opens Sept. 30, and the uncertainty surrounding both players raises doubts about their availability for Charlotte’s regular-season opener on Oct. 22.

Other Notes From Lee’s Media Session

Brandon Miller’s expanded role: Lee praised second-year wing Brandon Miller for becoming a vocal presence and mentoring fellow 2023 first-round pick Nick Smith Jr. Miller’s 2024-25 campaign ended prematurely after right wrist surgery in January, but he said in late July the wrist is nearly healed.

Leadership focus for LaMelo Ball: The coach wants franchise cornerstone LaMelo Ball to assume greater locker-room leadership responsibilities and believes recent trade addition Collin Sexton will aid that effort. Lee added that Ball has improved defensively but must sustain that effort more consistently.

Minutes for 2025 draftees: All four of Charlotte’s 2025 draft picks—Kon Knueppel, Liam McNeeley, Sion James and Ryan Kalkbrenner—will see preseason floor time. Lee singled out the 7-1 Kalkbrenner, suggesting the rookie center could carve out a career path similar to Milwaukee Bucks veteran Brook Lopez.
