The Charlotte Hornets, now 10-20, have won six of their past 12 contests and sit two games behind Milwaukee and 4.5 games behind Chicago for the Eastern Conference’s final play-in position. Tuesday’s home victory over Washington boosted optimism inside the locker room.
Defense driving recent surge
Head coach Charles Lee credited tighter defense for the uptick. “I feel like our defense continues to get better,” Lee said, pointing to favorable defensive ratings in each win. Offensively, he highlighted improved ball movement since a recent game in Brooklyn, noting frequent high-assist nights and sharper execution in both half-court and early offense sets.
Sexton back in rotation
Guard Collin Sexton returned Tuesday after missing nearly three weeks with a left quadriceps strain. Coming off the bench, he posted 12 points in 16 minutes. “Collin just never stops,” Lee said. “He’s always thinking about how he can win every possession and be impactful.”
Kalkbrenner’s status uncertain
Rookie center Ryan Kalkbrenner sat out a second straight game because of a sprained left elbow. His availability for Friday’s matchup in Orlando remains in doubt as the medical staff determines a recovery plan, Lee told reporters.
Grant Williams progresses from ACL tear
Forward Grant Williams, sidelined since early last season by a right ACL tear, distributed Christmas gifts to team employees this week but could not specify a return date. “We have a plan we’re approaching,” Williams said. “Whenever it is, I’ll be at my best and give 110 percent to this roster.”
Knueppel sets three-point record
Rookie wing Kon Knueppel became the fastest player in league history to reach 100 made three-pointers, accomplishing the feat in 29 games—12 fewer than previous record holder Lauri Markkanen.
The Hornets visit the Magic on Friday as they continue their push toward a postseason spot.
