The Charlotte Hornets filled the roster opening created earlier Thursday by signing forward Keyontae Johnson, the club announced on X (formerly Twitter) on Sept. 18 at 2:33 p.m. CST.
Contract terms were not released, but league norms indicate the 25-year-old likely agreed to a nonguaranteed Exhibit 10 deal. Such an arrangement would make him eligible for a bonus of up to $85,300 if the Hornets waive him and he then spends at least 60 days with their G League affiliate, the Greensboro Swarm.
Johnson already has ties to Greensboro after appearing in 46 games for the Swarm last season. He averaged 16.5 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 30.5 minutes, shooting 49.3 percent from the floor and 37.5 percent from three-point range.
The forward was selected 50th overall in the 2023 NBA Draft and spent his rookie year on a two-way contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder, logging nine NBA appearances during the 2023-24 campaign.
With Johnson replacing guard DaQuan Jeffries, Charlotte’s roster is back at the offseason maximum of 21 players. Additional transactions are expected as the Hornets finalize the group that will report to training camp and the preseason.
