Hornets Complete Deal for Coby White, Mike Conley

The Charlotte Hornets have finalized a trade with the Chicago Bulls that delivers guards Coby White and Mike Conley to Charlotte, the club confirmed at 11:21 p.m. ET on Thursday.

The agreement was first reported at 2:01 p.m. ET. In the swap, Chicago receives guard Collin Sexton, forward Ousmane Dieng, and three future second-round draft picks, according to multiple league sources.

Details of the transaction

Dieng is still under contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder, but he is expected to move to the Hornets in a separate deal involving center Mason Plumlee. The Thunder will send Charlotte an additional second-round pick in that side arrangement.

The three second-round selections heading to Chicago are:

  • the less favorable of the Nuggets’ or Hornets’ 2029 second-round pick,
  • the Nuggets’ 2031 second-round pick, and
  • the Knicks’ 2031 second-round pick.

White’s profile and contract status

White, 26 later this month, has averaged 19.5 points, 4.8 assists, and 4.1 rebounds across 182 games since taking over as a full-time starter at the beginning of the 2023-24 season, shooting .448 from the field, .369 from three-point range, and .859 at the line.

Calf issues have limited the veteran to 29 appearances this year, and he is on an expiring $12.9 million contract. Chicago could have offered a four-year extension worth up to $87 million, but White told team officials before the season he would test unrestricted free agency instead, which cooled the market for a first-round return.

Charlotte’s and Chicago’s next steps

Charlotte is expected to pursue a new deal with White, who grew up in North Carolina and starred at the University of North Carolina. Conley, however, is viewed as a strong buyout candidate. Because he will be traded twice in the same week, league rules would allow him to re-sign with the Minnesota Timberwolves if he clears waivers.

Chicago may still reshape its backcourt before the trade deadline. Sexton joins a crowded group that already includes Josh Giddey, Ayo Dosunmu, Jaden Ivey, Anfernee Simons, and Tre Jones.
