The Miami Heat are already discussing the possibility of a contract extension for newly acquired guard/forward Norman Powell, even though he has yet to appear in a game for the team, according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.
Powell’s contract status
Powell, 32, is entering the final season of a deal worth roughly $20.5 million and can sign an extension at any time before the end of next summer. Miami’s interest in a new agreement will hinge on how he meshes early in the season alongside Tyler Herro, Bam Adebayo and Andrew Wiggins.
Trade background and recent performance
The veteran arrived in July in a three-team trade that sent him from the Los Angeles Clippers to Miami and moved Kevin Love and Kyle Anderson to the Utah Jazz. Last season with the Clippers, Powell averaged 21.8 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists over 60 games while shooting 48 percent from the field and 42 percent from three-point range, marking the most productive year of his career.
Expansion and potential realignment
If the NBA adds franchises in Las Vegas and Seattle, leaguewide realignment could follow. Zach Harper of The Athletic outlined scenarios that would shift either the Minnesota Timberwolves, New Orleans Pelicans or Memphis Grizzlies to the Eastern Conference, with additional division changes likely in most expansion models.
St. Bonaventure pro day
St. Bonaventure University will hold its first-ever pro day on Oct. 11 at the NBPA training facility in Manhattan. Former NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, now general manager of the Bonnies program, described the event as “a tremendous opportunity for NBA and G League front office executives to scout our players in a competitive practice and workout environment.”
The Heat’s evaluation of Powell, continuing expansion talks and St. Bonaventure’s upcoming showcase will all be storylines to watch as the NBA offseason progresses.
