Miami’s second-year center Kel’el Ware logged only 11 minutes and 30 seconds during Sunday’s 130-113 loss to the Lakers, continuing a stretch of reduced playing time. “I feel like you have to trust the coach and the decisions that he comes up with,” Ware said, adding that he must stay ready when called upon.
The Heat have been outscored by 10 points per 100 possessions with Ware on the floor this season, the worst net rating among the club’s regulars. Frontcourt mate Bam Adebayo voiced confidence in the 7-footer, saying, “We’re not going to give up on him. We know how great he can be.”
Team defense struggles
Los Angeles’ 130 points marked the second straight defeat on Miami’s current road trip. Head coach Erik Spoelstra attributed the setback to “a lack of effort on plays that we’re accustomed to doing and making,” and cited uncharacteristic fouls and “mindless plays” as key factors.
Powell remains sidelined
Guard Norman Powell missed his third consecutive game Sunday with a right groin strain. Initially listed as questionable, he was ruled out hours before tipoff and is again questionable for Monday’s meeting with the Clippers, the team that sent him to Miami in a three-team deal last July.
Lawsuit considered unlikely
Miami is not expected to pursue legal action against the Hornets over undisclosed gambling allegations involving Terry Rozier before his January 2024 acquisition, according to the Miami Herald. Sources told the newspaper that owner Micky Arison and CEO Nick Arison are generally reluctant to litigate. The NBA was alerted to the suspicious betting the day it occurred but did not inform the Heat before approving the trade. The Arisons maintain a strong relationship with Commissioner Adam Silver.
LaRoche’s impact on offense
Consultant Noah LaRoche, hired this season after serving as a Grizzlies assistant, has been credited with introducing a more fluid, motion-based offense similar to the one he helped implement in Memphis.
