Heat’s Play-In Return Raises Questions About Miami’s Roster Approach

The Miami Heat are headed to the play-in tournament for the fourth consecutive year, and a growing chorus inside and outside the organization is blaming roster stagnation for the slide, according to a report by Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.

Front-office patience under fire

Jackson writes that Miami has bypassed the NBA’s three common rebuilding paths—tanking, flipping assets at peak value and trading aggressively for disgruntled stars. Team president Pat Riley and ownership remain firmly against losing on purpose, eliminating the first option. Meanwhile, center Bam Adebayo is considered off-limits in trade talks, and guard Tyler Herro was told last season he would only be moved for an all-time great, a stance that now collides with a cooling market for one-way scorers, Jackson notes.

The columnist also points out that stars such as Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, Brandon Ingram and Derrick White changed teams over the past three seasons for no more than a single first-round pick. Trae Young was reportedly acquired without any firsts involved, and Ja Morant could have been obtained at a “bargain” price at February’s deadline, Jackson adds.

Riley sounded optimistic last May about Miami’s draft capital, young players and friendly contracts, but the club has since handed Nikola Jovic a four-year, $62 million extension that now appears questionable, the report states.

Play-in math still in play

Friday’s victory over Washington kept Miami’s hopes of hosting the 9-vs-10 game alive. To secure the No. 9 seed, the Heat must beat Atlanta at home Sunday and see Charlotte fall to New York, Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald writes. Head coach Erik Spoelstra, whose team has dropped 10 of its last 14, offered a blunt assessment: “It’s harrowing … you don’t want to be in there.”

Lineup shuffle and injury updates

Rookie center Kel’el Ware replaced Pelle Larsson in Friday’s starting five, and Spoelstra hinted the change could stick. “Kel’el is really important to what we’re trying to do,” the coach said, adding that starting alongside Adebayo should stabilize the rookie’s minutes.

Tyler Herro and Norman Powell sat out the Wizards game with minor ailments but could return Sunday, Spoelstra told reporters. “Hopefully it’s just for today,” he said, explaining that neither player could “loosen up” enough to play.
