Miami could regain another key ball-handler this weekend. Guard Davion Mitchell, sidelined during part of training camp with calf soreness, is expected to make his first appearance of the preseason Sunday against the Magic, head coach Erik Spoelstra confirmed. The 27-year-old said the Heat medical staff took a cautious approach after he “felt something” in his calf, noting that he is now “100 percent” ready.
Mitchell’s return comes while starting shooting guard Tyler Herro continues to recover from left ankle surgery and is likely to miss the season’s opening month. Miami also remains without Terry Rozier (no timetable) and has Simone Fontecchio practicing on a limited basis because of left lower-leg tightness.
Ware’s forceful night
Rookie center Kelel Ware followed Spoelstra’s call for game impact over statistics by delivering 29 points, 12 rebounds and a plus-10 rating in Wednesday’s victory over San Antonio. Spoelstra praised Ware’s pick-and-roll coverage, rim protection and rebounding, highlighting a drive from the top of the key over a potential three-pointer as his “favorite play.” Ware said he views every message from his coach as motivation to “play as hard as I can.”
Jakucionis debuts, builds chemistry
First-round pick Kasparas Jakucionis made his preseason debut the same night, supplying eight points and 10 assists after missing two games with a sprained wrist. Spoelstra noted a “natural connection” developing between the Lithuanian guard and Ware. Jakucionis said he is focused on daily improvement and maintaining consistent effort regardless of results.
Jaquez Jr. shows progress
Second-year forward Jaime Jaquez Jr. added 19 points on 8-for-8 shooting in 28 minutes. Spoelstra, while encouraged, said Jaquez must continue to read help defenses and make plays that keep opponents honest.
Roster moves
Miami recently waived guard Trevor Keels to sign Gabe Madsen. Spoelstra expects both players to land with the G League’s Sioux Falls Skyforce. The coach credited Keels for improved conditioning and defensive commitment and praised Madsen’s “grit” and off-ball shooting ability.
