Hawks Release Two-Way Center Malik Williams

The Atlanta Hawks have waived center Malik Williams, ending his two-way contract just before the league-wide salary guarantee deadline, the team announced on January 7.

Because the move came ahead of the guarantee date, the 27-year-old big man will earn only the prorated portion of his two-way deal. Williams had joined Atlanta’s NBA roster in December after season-ending injuries sidelined fellow two-way players Jacob Toppin and Eli Ndiaye.

Although officially on the Hawks’ books for several weeks, Williams spent nearly the entire stint with the G League’s College Park Skyhawks. He was active for three NBA games but did not log any minutes.

If Williams clears waivers without signing elsewhere, he is expected to remain with College Park, which retains his G League rights. In 19 appearances this season for the Skyhawks, the former Louisville standout is averaging 16.9 points, 10.4 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 28.0 minutes, while shooting 39.9 percent from the field. His efficiency has dipped amid a career-high 7.1 three-point attempts per game, of which he is converting 32.1 percent.

Atlanta now has one open two-way slot alongside forward Caleb Houstan and guard RayJ Dennis, whose newly signed agreement spans two seasons.
