The Atlanta Hawks placed guards Lamont Butler and Kobe Johnson and center Malik Williams on waivers on September 26, trimming the club to its maximum 18-man group for training camp.
Johnson had joined the team on an Exhibit 10 contract a little more than two weeks ago, while Butler and Williams signed the same deals only two days earlier. By signing and then releasing the trio, Atlanta preserves their eligibility for a bonus of up to $85,300 if each player spends at least 60 days with the Hawks’ G League affiliate, the College Park Skyhawks. College Park previously obtained Williams’ returning-player rights earlier this month.
Johnson, the younger brother of Hawks forward Jalen Johnson, went undrafted in 2025 after averaging 7.9 points, 5.9 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.6 steals and hitting 36.2% of his three-point attempts as a senior at UCLA.
Butler, a 6-foot-2 guard who finished his college career at Kentucky, averaged 11.4 points and 4.3 rebounds while shooting 39.1% from deep during his fifth-year senior season before going undrafted in 2025.
Williams, a 6-foot-11 center, spent five seasons at Louisville. He posted 9.5 points and 8.0 rebounds in his final year and entered the NBA in 2022 without being drafted.
