The Atlanta Hawks released center Charles Bassey and guard Lamont Butler on Saturday, dropping the club’s standard roster to 14 players, one below the NBA maximum.

Bassey, 24, had joined Atlanta on an Exhibit 10 contract before training camp. The 6-foot-11 center was originally taken 53rd overall by Philadelphia in the 2021 draft, spent his rookie year with the 76ers and the last three seasons in San Antonio. Injuries stalled his progress with the Spurs: a non-displaced patella fracture ended his 2022/23 campaign, and an ACL tear in December 2023 sidelined him for the rest of 2023/24. He returned to appear in 36 games last season, averaging 4.4 points and 4.2 rebounds in 10.4 minutes.

Butler, a 6-foot-2 guard who finished his college career at Kentucky, re-signed with Atlanta earlier this week on a training-camp deal after being waived in late September. The undrafted rookie averaged 11.4 points and 4.3 rebounds while shooting 39.1 percent from three-point range as a fifth-year senior.

Both players are eligible to join the College Park Skyhawks, Atlanta’s NBA G League affiliate, if they clear waivers.

The Hawks currently have 10 players on fully guaranteed contracts. Vit Krejci and N’Faly Dante hold partial guarantees, while Caleb Houstan and Mouhamed Gueye are on non-guaranteed deals. ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk reported that Dante is assured a regular-season roster spot, and the other three non-guaranteed players are also expected to make the team.
