The Atlanta Hawks acknowledged the NBA’s authority while expressing strong disappointment after the league called off the team’s planned “Magic City Night” promotion.
The event had been set for March 16 at State Farm Arena during a game against the Orlando Magic and was designed to honor Magic City, a well-known Atlanta nightlife landmark. The evening was to feature themed activities, participation from principal owner Jami Gertz and the launch of the franchise’s “Hawks AF” podcast.
“While we are very disappointed in the NBA’s decision to cancel our Magic City Night promotion, we fully respect its decision,” the Hawks said in a statement. “As a franchise, we remain committed to celebrating the best of Atlanta, with authenticity, in ways that continue to unite and bring us all together.”
Criticism surfaced shortly after the promotion was announced. San Antonio Spurs center Luke Kornet urged the Hawks to drop the idea in a blog post, arguing that the league should foster an atmosphere respectful of women. Golden State Warriors veteran Al Horford later voiced support for Kornet’s position on social media.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said the league opted to intervene after hearing “significant concerns from a broad array of league stakeholders, including fans, partners and employees.”
The March 16 game will proceed as scheduled, but without the promotional elements tied to Magic City.
