ATLANTA — The Atlanta Hawks and All-Star guard Trae Young are not expected to open discussions on a contract extension during the 2025 off-season, according to sources cited by Jake Fischer of The Stein Line.

Young, 26, is heading into the final guaranteed year of his current deal and holds a $49 million player option for the 2026-27 season. People close to the situation told Fischer that Young’s camp has long assumed he will play out the upcoming year before making any decision on the option.

While Young was still represented by Klutch Sports, agent Rich Paul explored ways to pair him with 2024 Rookie of the Year Victor Wembanyama in San Antonio, Fischer reported. Paul also weighed similar scenarios for De’Aaron Fox and Darius Garland, hoping to deliver one of his point guards to the Spurs.

Fox’s contract expired a year earlier than Young’s and, combined with his preference to relocate to Texas, accelerated his departure from Sacramento. The Spurs landed Fox in a three-team trade in February and signed him to a four-year maximum extension last week.

Young has since switched agencies to CAA and is not pushing for a trade, per Fischer. Team executives believe Atlanta’s summer roster upgrades make the Hawks a legitimate contender, and Young is said to view newcomer Kristaps Porziņģis as the best scoring forward he has ever played alongside.

The Hawks’ improved outlook could enhance Young’s chances of making an All-NBA team this season. Such an honor would allow a potential five-year extension to reach approximately $350 million under league rules.

Even so, sources told Fischer that Young is disappointed the organization has not yet approached him about a new deal. Conversations could resume if he propels Atlanta back into the playoffs; otherwise, he may headline next year’s free-agent class.

Young’s strong relationship with head coach Quin Snyder is viewed internally as a positive sign that an agreement could eventually be reached.
