The Atlanta Hawks have expanded their training-camp roster by signing guards Lamont Butler, Deivon Smith and M.J. Walker, the club announced in a press release.
Contract details were not released, but the trio is expected to be on non-guaranteed Exhibit 10 agreements. Such deals can be converted to two-way contracts or provide bonuses of up to $85,300 if a player is waived before opening night and then spends at least 60 days with the Hawks’ G League affiliate, the College Park Skyhawks.
Butler, who played collegiately at San Diego State and Kentucky, initially inked an Exhibit 10 pact with Atlanta in late September and was waived a few days later. He and Smith both suited up for the Hawks during July’s Las Vegas Summer League.
Smith, a native of Georgia, appeared for four schools over the past five seasons—Mississippi State, Georgia Tech, Utah and St. John’s. The 6’1″ guard averaged 9.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.4 steals in 30 games last season for the Red Storm, shooting .380 from the field, .352 from three and .667 at the foul line in 27.1 minutes per night.
Walker, also from Georgia, went undrafted in 2021 and has spent the last four seasons in the G League with the Westchester Knicks and Greensboro Swarm. The 27-year-old logged a 10-day hardship contract with the Phoenix Suns in 2021-22, appearing in two NBA games for a total of eight minutes.
Atlanta now has 21 players under contract, the maximum allowed during the offseason.
