The Atlanta Hawks are exploring a one-year contract extension worth roughly $20 million for veteran guard CJ McCollum, according to Grant Afseth of DallasHoopsJournal.com.
McCollum, 34, is set to join Atlanta along with Corey Kispert in the pending trade that will send Trae Young to the Washington Wizards. He is owed $30.67 million for the 2025-26 season, the final year of his current deal.
The nine-year NBA veteran has never reached free agency, having signed three extensions during his career. It remains unclear whether he intends to test the open market in 2026 or accept a short-term agreement once the trade is finalized.
Team officials view McCollum as a secondary ball-handler and scorer who can operate on or off the ball alongside the Hawks’ younger core, Afseth reports.
Before the trade, McCollum started Washington’s first 35 games, averaging 18.8 points, 3.6 assists and 3.5 rebounds while shooting 45.4% from the field and 39.3% from three in 30.9 minutes per contest. He was in his debut season with the Wizards after arriving from New Orleans last offseason.
A one-year extension would preserve Atlanta’s long-term salary flexibility while adding veteran stability to its backcourt rotation.
