The Atlanta Hawks have officially locked up guard Dyson Daniels on a four-year, $100 million rookie-scale extension that carries no team or player options, the club announced Monday afternoon.
“We are beyond thrilled to reach a long-term deal with Dyson, and we are excited to watch him continue to grow with our group,” general manager Onsi Saleh said in a statement. “This extension reflects our belief in him today and into the future.”
The agreement was first reported earlier Monday by ESPN’s Shams Charania. The new contract will begin with the 2026-27 season and averages $25 million annually.
Rapid Rise in Atlanta
Selected eighth overall by New Orleans in the 2022 draft, Daniels spent two seasons with the Pelicans before arriving in Atlanta as part of last summer’s Dejounte Murray trade. The move ignited his career: the 6-foot-7 guard earned the NBA’s 2024-25 Most Improved Player award, finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting, and secured First Team All-Defense honors.
Daniels appeared in 76 games, all starts, averaging 14.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, 4.4 assists and a league-leading 3.0 steals across 33.8 minutes per contest. His 229 steals marked the highest single-season total since Gary Payton’s 1995-96 campaign. He also shot a personal-best 49.3 percent from the field and 34.1 percent from beyond the arc.
Extension Landscape
The Australian native becomes the ninth member of the 2022 draft class to secure an extension that will kick in for 2026-27, joining Christian Braun, Paolo Banchero, Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren, Jabari Smith Jr., Keegan Murray, Nikola Jovic and Shaedon Sharpe. Like Braun, Daniels landed a $25 million average annual salary, though Braun’s Denver deal covers five years.
Backcourt Outlook
Daniels and three-time All-Star Trae Young formed a productive backcourt last season, but Young’s long-term future remains unsettled. The point guard holds a $48.97 million player option for 2026-27 and could choose free agency next summer. The Hawks and Young are not expected to negotiate an extension at this stage.
