Los Angeles Clippers guards James Harden and Kawhi Leonard said they discovered the club had severed ties with veteran point guard Chris Paul through social media and were stunned by the move.

Speaking after Wednesday’s victory over the Atlanta Hawks, Harden called the development “confusing and shocking.” He added, “I guess the front office felt that was the best decision for the organization,” noting that he can only control his own preparation and performance.

Leonard echoed the sentiment, explaining that he reread the news to make sure it was accurate. “I guess they had a conversation, and the front office made a decision,” he said.

Rift With Lue Cited

Reports from The Athletic and ESPN indicated friction between Paul and head coach Tyronn Lue helped trigger the split. Lue told reporters before the Atlanta game that he did not envision such an ending when the team brought Paul aboard this past summer.

“I have a lot of respect for him,” Lue said. “You don’t want to see a great go out like this. It just wasn’t a good fit, and we understood that.”

Internal Complaints Detailed

The Athletic, citing league sources, reported that Paul’s persistent criticism of teammates, coaches, and staff was felt organization-wide during a disappointing start to the season. Some players and coaches bristled at what they viewed as an abrasive tone, the outlet noted.

According to the report, club officials recently asked Paul to stop “locker room lawyering.” On Tuesday, he reportedly voiced open criticism during a film session, although the front office had already chosen to cut ties.

Next Steps for Paul

Because Paul signed as a free agent, league rules prevent the Clippers from trading him until Dec. 15. President of basketball operations Lawrence Frank said the team will collaborate with the 38-year-old’s representatives to determine whether he is traded at the first opportunity or waived sooner.
