The Memphis Grizzlies announced Tuesday that second-year center Zach Edey will have surgery on his left ankle to address persistent pain and talar bone stress.
According to the team, orthopedic specialists determined that Edey’s lateral ligaments remain stable after a June procedure, but progressive laxity in the deltoid (medial) ligaments continues to cause discomfort. The upcoming operation is designed to reinforce the medial ligament complex and speed bone healing.
Edey, 23, has appeared in only 11 games this season. He averaged 13.6 points, 11.1 rebounds and 1.9 blocks in 25.8 minutes, while Memphis outscored opponents by 18.3 points per 100 possessions during his 284 on-court minutes. Drafted ninth overall in 2024 after winning two straight AP Player of the Year awards at Purdue, the 7-foot-3 Canadian missed the season’s first month while recovering from his initial ankle surgery, then was diagnosed with a stress reaction in the same ankle in December.
The Grizzlies said a post-surgery update will outline a return timetable, but Edey is not expected to play again this season. The club added that a full recovery is anticipated.
Clarke Sidelined at Least Two More Weeks
Memphis also provided an update on Brandon Clarke, who has been out since Dec. 20 with a Grade 2 strain of his right calf. The forward/center will be re-evaluated in two weeks, the team said.
Clarke, 29, underwent arthroscopic surgery in September to treat synovitis in his right knee after a PCL sprain ended his 2024/25 campaign. He sustained the current calf injury in his second appearance of the 2025/26 season. Previous injuries include a torn Achilles in March 2023 that limited him to six games in 2023/24.
