The Memphis Grizzlies will be without guard Ty Jerome for a minimum of four weeks after he was diagnosed with a high-grade strain in his right calf, the team announced Monday. The 28-year-old will be re-evaluated after the initial recovery period.

Jerome suffered the injury during Friday’s preseason finale against the Miami Heat. He joined Memphis in July on a three-year, $27.7 million contract signed with the room exception and was expected to play a key role in the backcourt rotation.

His absence compounds a growing injury list for the Grizzlies. Scotty Pippen Jr. is projected to miss at least 12 weeks following surgery on his left big toe, while Zach Edey (ankle surgery) and Brandon Clarke (knee surgery) are also expected to be sidelined when the regular season begins.

With four players out for extended periods, Memphis should become eligible for a 10-day hardship exception after its third game, noted Chris Herrington of The Daily Memphian. Potential free-agent targets include big man Charles Bassey and guard Jared Butler, depending on positional needs.

Jerome is coming off a strong season with the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he averaged 12.5 points, 3.4 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 1.1 steals across 70 games (19.9 minutes per contest). He shot 51.6% from the field, 43.9% from three and 87.2% at the free-throw line, finishing third in Sixth Man of the Year voting.

Rookie second-round pick Javon Small and second-year guard Cam Spencer are among the in-house candidates likely to see increased minutes while Jerome recovers.
