Memphis, Tenn. — The Memphis Grizzlies will be without newly signed guard Ty Jerome for a minimum of four weeks after he was diagnosed with a high-grade strain in his right calf, the team announced Monday.

The 28-year-old was injured during Friday’s preseason finale against the Miami Heat. Memphis said Jerome will be re-evaluated in mid-November.

Jerome agreed to a three-year, $27.7 million contract in July using the room exception and was expected to hold a prominent spot in the club’s backcourt rotation. His absence adds to a growing injury list that already includes Scotty Pippen Jr. (toe surgery), rookie Zach Edey (ankle), and Brandon Clarke (knee), all of whom are projected to miss significant time.

With four rotation players sidelined, the Grizzlies are on pace to qualify for a 10-day hardship roster exception after their third regular-season game, according to Chris Herrington of The Daily Memphian. Free-agent center Charles Bassey and guard Jared Butler were mentioned as possible short-term targets.

Jerome averaged 12.5 points and 3.4 assists while shooting 43.9 percent from beyond the arc last season with the Cleveland Cavaliers, finishing third in Sixth Man of the Year voting. Rookie Javon Small and second-year guard Cam Spencer are next in line for additional minutes until Jerome returns.
