Taj Gibson Set to Join Grizzlies on New Deal

The Memphis Grizzlies intend to sign veteran big man Taj Gibson, agent Mark Bartelstein told ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Memphis cleared a roster slot by agreeing to a buyout with Kyle Anderson, who plans to join the Minnesota Timberwolves. Gibson, 40, played 37 games for the Charlotte Hornets last season, logging 2.9 points and 3.2 rebounds in 11.1 minutes per night. He had not appeared in the NBA this season, but league executives widely praise his leadership and professionalism.
The 6’9” forward/center will arrive as the Grizzlies continue a full rebuild. Memphis traded Desmond Bane last summer, suffered another spate of injuries during the 2025-26 campaign, and moved Jaren Jackson Jr. to the Utah Jazz earlier this month. Several frontcourt players remain sidelined, leaving the club short on size and experience.
This signing will launch Gibson’s 17th NBA season. When he steps on the court for Memphis, he will become only the 35th player in league history to appear in a game at age 40.
