The Memphis Grizzlies announced that fourth-year guard Scotty Pippen Jr., 25, will undergo a sesamoidectomy to relieve pain in his right big toe. The club said a timetable for his return will be set after the operation but added that a full recovery is expected.
Pippen had the same procedure on his left big toe in October, a setback that sidelined him for more than 15 weeks before he made his season debut on February 6. Given that recovery period, the latest surgery is likely to keep him out for the remainder of the 2025-26 campaign.
In 10 games this season, Pippen is averaging 11.4 points, 4.7 assists, 2.2 rebounds and 1.9 steals in 21.2 minutes while shooting 44.8% from the field, 31.3% from three and 78.3% at the foul line. Last season he appeared in a career-high 79 contests, contributing 9.9 points, 4.4 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 21.3 minutes with shooting splits of 48.0%/39.7%/71.3%.
Memphis continues to deal with a lengthy injury list. Pippen, Ty Jerome, Zach Edey, Brandon Clarke and Ja Morant have all missed most of the season, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope was ruled out for the year last month following finger surgery.
The NBA granted the Grizzlies a hardship exception on Thursday, which the team used to sign 26-year-old wing Tyler Burton to a 10-day contract. Burton has spent the season with the Grizzlies’ G League affiliate, the Memphis Hustle.
