Memphis swingman Cedric Coward has quickly validated the Grizzlies’ decision to take him 11th overall in June, capping an unlikely rise that began without a single Division I scholarship offer.
The 22-year-old entered college at Division III Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, on a non-athletic scholarship. After a standout freshman season he transferred to Eastern Washington, then tested the 2024 draft waters following his junior year before withdrawing. A subsequent move to Washington State ended after six games when a torn shoulder labrum ended his senior campaign.
An efficient six-game start in Pullman and a strong showing at the NBA combine pushed Coward up draft boards. Through seven regular-season appearances with Memphis, he is averaging 15.0 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.1 steals while shooting 58.7% from the field, 47.8% from three and 90.9% at the line in 25.3 minutes per night.
“His approach and professionalism drive his daily development,” head coach Tuomas Iisalo said. “He has length, physicality, athleticism and skill, and it’s impressive how quickly he’s adapted after not playing much last year.”
Morant suspension addressed briefly
Before Monday’s matchup with Detroit, Iisalo declined to elaborate on the one-game suspension handed to Ja Morant for conduct detrimental to the team, repeating that “we had a discussion and we’re all looking to move forward.” Reports indicated the coach questioned Morant’s leadership and effort after Friday’s loss to the Lakers, prompting an inappropriate response from the guard.
Iisalo did expand on his rotation strategy—reported to be a point of contention with Morant—saying shorter stints are designed to create a competitive edge now and in the future.
CBS Sports’ Sam Quinn wrote that Memphis may need to consider moving on from Morant, noting that off-court issues, injuries and declining production could limit both his trade market and the return for the 26-year-old, who is on a maximum-salary deal through 2027-28.
Edey nears return
Second-year center Zach Edey took part in a Monday practice with the G League’s Memphis Hustle and was immediately recalled, marking progress in his recovery from offseason ankle surgery. The Grizzlies have opened the season without Edey and forward Brandon Clarke, who is rehabbing from knee surgery.
