MEMPHIS — The Memphis Grizzlies have signed rookie guard Jahmai Mashack to a two-way contract and released second-year forward PJ Hall, the club confirmed Monday.
Agent Adie von Gontard first told ESPN’s Shams Charania of Mashack’s promotion, and the team later issued an official announcement.
Mashack’s path to the roster
Mashack, 23, entered the organization as the 59th overall pick in June and opened the year with the Memphis Hustle, the Grizzlies’ NBA G League affiliate. Through five G League games, the former Tennessee standout averaged 7.6 points, 5.4 assists, 4.4 rebounds and 3.4 steals in 31.3 minutes while shooting .354 from the field and .143 from three.
He previously impressed at Summer League, posting 9.0 points, 4.4 assists, 4.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.2 blocks in 23.7 minutes on .462/.417/.600 shooting.
In a recent interview with the Memphis Commercial Appeal, Mashack said his focus with the Hustle has been expanding his offensive game: “Being able to have that gravity to be able to score the ball and also get my guys open … that’s what I want to be able to do.”
Backcourt depth badly needed
Mashack’s arrival bolsters a Grizzlies backcourt depleted by injuries. Scotty Pippen Jr. (toe surgery) is out multiple months, Ty Jerome (calf strain) has not played this season, rookie Javon Small (turf toe) is sidelined at least three weeks, and Ja Morant left Saturday’s game with a sore calf.
Hall exits after short stint
Hall, also 23, spent his rookie year on a two-way deal with Denver before signing with Memphis over the summer. The former Clemson forward appeared in seven games for the Grizzlies, averaging 1.9 points and 1.3 rebounds in 3.9 minutes.
The Grizzlies now have two of their three two-way slots filled.
