MEMPHIS — General manager Zach Kleiman told reporters Friday that the Memphis Grizzlies are “turning the page” after a flurry of roster moves, signaling a focus on emerging talent and an uncertain outlook for star guard Ja Morant.
Only 11 months ago Kleiman flatly dismissed any possibility of trading Morant. On Friday he declined to repeat that commitment, noting that the organization’s priorities have changed dramatically over the past year. Multiple reports indicated Memphis explored Morant deals before Thursday’s deadline and intends to revisit talks this summer.
“This is about organizational direction,” Kleiman said. “We’ve been incredibly supportive of Ja, but we’re building a team that we believe can reach the highest level in this league.”
Breaking up the former Big Three
The new approach was underscored by this week’s trade that shipped forward Jaren Jackson Jr. to Utah, eight months after guard Desmond Bane was sent to Orlando. Those moves leave Morant as the last member of the club’s previous cornerstone trio.
Kleiman downplayed speculation of friction with Morant, describing recent talks with the 24-year-old and his representatives as “open, constructive, honest.”
Young nucleus takes center stage
The executive identified rookies Zach Edey, Cedric Coward, Jaylen Wells and Cam Spencer as players who embody the franchise’s new identity. He also highlighted 2025 first-round pick Walter Clayton, acquired in the Jackson deal, calling him “physically tough, tough-minded, smart, a winner.”
Despite the roster overhaul, Kleiman rejected the notion of a prolonged rebuild. “I don’t think this is some five-year, try-to-be-terrible process,” he said. “Between the assets we’ve accumulated and the players we have, we’re very optimistic.”
Frontcourt on the agenda
Memphis waived veteran guard Eric Gordon on Friday, creating an open roster spot. Kleiman said bolstering the frontcourt is a priority with centers Edey and Brandon Clarke both recovering from injuries.
Newcomers Clayton, Kyle Anderson and Taylor Hendricks were not listed on the injury report for Friday night’s home game against Portland and were expected to be available. Anderson played in Memphis from 2018 to 2022 before stints in Minnesota and elsewhere.
The Grizzlies entered Friday at 18-35, 13th in the Western Conference, as they begin charting a new course built around their developing core.
