The league-wide belief that the Memphis Grizzlies will move on from star guard Ja Morant before the NBA trade deadline remains unchanged, according to multiple executives familiar with the situation.
Reporter Damichael Cole of the Memphis Commercial Appeal reiterated that front-office officials around the NBA still anticipate a deal before the Feb. 5 deadline. Morant, who is earning $39.4 million this season, does not possess a no-trade clause, simplifying potential negotiations.
Sources told Hoops Wire that both the Grizzlies and Morant have interest in eventually parting ways. Rival teams believe Memphis is seeking draft picks and young talent in return, and several clubs continue to monitor conversations.
The tension reportedly centers on Morant’s frustration with head coach Tuomas Iisalo’s rotation strategy. The use of short stints and frequent mass substitutions is believed to have disrupted Morant’s on-court rhythm and consistency.
Morant has appeared in 19 games, averaging 19.3 points and 7.8 assists. Memphis, meanwhile, is currently outside the Western Conference playoff picture.
While no deal is imminent, most league insiders view the partnership as closer to ending than continuing.
