Antetokounmpo Pushes to Play as Bucks Seek Season Shutdown

Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo is resisting the organization’s plan to keep him out for the rest of the 2025-26 campaign, according to multiple reports.
The 31-year-old star has appeared in only 36 of the team’s 68 games because of knee, groin, ankle and calf problems. He is currently sidelined with a left knee hyperextension and bone bruise.
With 14 games remaining and Milwaukee sitting 6.5 games behind the Eastern Conference play-in line, team officials have told Antetokounmpo they believe shutting him down would benefit both sides and give him time to prepare for 2026-27, The Athletic’s Eric Nehm reported.
Antetokounmpo, however, has informed the Bucks he intends to return as soon as doctors clear him, Nehm added. ESPN’s Shams Charania confirmed the disagreement, noting that several internal meetings were held over the past 24 hours and that the two-time MVP remains determined to play again this season.
The Bucks must balance their medical concerns with a desire to keep their franchise cornerstone satisfied ahead of his eligibility for a long-term extension in October. League sources said Milwaukee listened to trade inquiries involving Antetokounmpo before last month’s deadline but never approached a deal; the forward has not requested a move and has repeatedly expressed a preference to stay if the roster can contend for another title.
At 28-40, Milwaukee is unlikely to reach the postseason and could improve its draft position by sidelining Antetokounmpo. The club will receive the less favorable of its own 2026 first-round pick and the New Orleans Pelicans’ pick; the Bucks’ record currently keeps them several games ahead of the 23-46 Pelicans, meaning even the least favorable selection is projected to land in the top 10.
Keeping Antetokounmpo out would also reduce the risk of further injury in games that have no playoff implications. Whether the front office revisits trade discussions or retools the roster around him this offseason, ensuring the former Finals MVP is fully healthy remains a priority.
