One week after being diagnosed with a low-grade groin strain, Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo will accompany the team on its upcoming two-game road swing but is not yet expected to play, head coach Doc Rivers said Monday night.
Antetokounmpo shot on the court prior to Monday’s home loss to the Portland Trail Blazers, according to The Athletic. He will join the Bucks when they face the Miami Heat on Wednesday and the New York Knicks on Friday, marking his first road trip since the injury.
The forward was initially projected to miss “at least a week or two,” and Milwaukee has dropped four straight games in his absence, including Monday’s defeat to a Portland squad operating without several key players.
Rivers told reporters he is not counting on Antetokounmpo to suit up during the trip but added that both the two-time MVP and guard Kevin Porter Jr. “are getting close” to returning. Porter is recovering from meniscus surgery and had already been targeting an early-December comeback.
The Bucks will reassess Antetokounmpo’s status after the road swing as they attempt to halt their recent slide without their leading scorer and rebounder.
