Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo said he welcomes high expectations and wants an expanded role as a creator, outlining his goals for the upcoming NBA season during an offseason interview in Greece.
Speaking with Sport24’s Harris Stavrou — comments later relayed by The Athletic’s Eric Nehm — the two-time MVP made it clear that competing for a title remains his only motivation. “I like the challenge,” Antetokounmpo said. “If I’m in an environment where there’s no pressure and I don’t think we can achieve something great, I don’t want to be there.”
The 29-year-old forward, a husband and father of four, tied that mindset to his personal evolution. “What makes me happy is when I win and feel that there is a challenge,” he added. “I wake up in the morning and say, ‘We have to win today. If we don’t win today, what will we hear?’”
More Ball-Handling on His Wish List
Antetokounmpo also delivered a direct message to new head coach Doc Rivers and general manager Jon Horst: he wants the ball in his hands more often. “To get the best out of the team and to get the best out of me, I have to be a creator,” he said. “Not just be a play finisher. Not just go score 30.”
He pointed to the final two months of last season, when he enjoyed increased freedom, as evidence the approach works. Rivers and Horst have already indicated they intend to give their franchise centerpiece greater ball-handling responsibility, aligning with his request.
Encouraged by Roster Changes
Assessing Milwaukee’s retooled lineup, Antetokounmpo acknowledged a lack of experience but praised the team’s athleticism. “We’re young; we have legs, fresh legs,” he said. The forward highlighted newly acquired center Myles Turner and guard Cole Anthony, calling Anthony “an X-Factor” who could become “the surprise of the year.”
Asked whether the Bucks can capture another championship, Antetokounmpo answered without hesitation: “Yeah, we have a chance. For sure.”
