The relationship between Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks is deteriorating to the point where an offseason separation is viewed as a realistic outcome, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported.

One individual connected to the organization described the atmosphere as “as toxic as any in the league” after a season in which Milwaukee missed the playoffs. Multiple team sources told ESPN that uncertainty surrounding Antetokounmpo’s future has permeated the locker room. “When your best player is halfway out the door, you can’t expect to win,” one source said. Another added that the two-time MVP seems disengaged on a daily basis.

Although Antetokounmpo has not formally demanded a trade, Charania noted that the forward and his agent, Alex Saratsis, informed the front office early in the season that it might be time to explore other options. That conversation led to a meeting with minority owners Jimmy Haslam and Wes Edens before February’s trade deadline to discuss the possibility of an amicable split.

According to ESPN, both sides have had a standing agreement—dating back to the superstar’s contract extensions in 2020 and 2023—to work together on a deal if circumstances changed. “Giannis tried to handle this professionally by being upfront,” a source said. “What could have ended smoothly now risks becoming a messy breakup.”

Milwaukee weighed trade proposals ahead of the deadline, engaging with the Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves, sources said. The Bucks reportedly gave serious thought to a Heat package featuring Tyler Herro, rookie Kelel Ware and multiple draft picks, but ultimately opted to wait, believing stronger offers could surface during the summer.

Charania’s report states that team decision-makers now accept that an Antetokounmpo deal is more likely to take place in the offseason than during the season.
