Los Angeles has shifted its focus to scoring firepower as the club’s once-reliable defense struggles to regain last season’s form.

In 2022-23, the Lakers went 19-7 during January and February and climbed into the NBA’s top five in defensive rating, embracing a Luka Doncic–Anthony Davis–driven identity that emphasized grit and stops. That approach has not carried over. ESPN’s Dave McMenamin reports the team has fallen to 14th defensively this year, surrendering 10 more points per 100 possessions than league-leading Oklahoma City.

The slip has made offense the primary path to wins. With Doncic, Austin Reaves and LeBron James sharing playmaking duties, Los Angeles ranks second in true shooting percentage and second in free-throw attempts. The trio’s ability to shoot, drive and draw fouls has made late-game trips to the line almost automatic.

The plan was on full display last Tuesday against Utah. For the first time all season the full 14-man roster was available, and the Lakers responded with a season-high 140 points, 60 percent shooting and 31 assists.

James is still rebuilding his stamina following a sciatica layoff, and head coach JJ Redick continues to juggle rotations now that he finally has a healthy bench. Until the defense rounds back into shape, the club appears committed to simply outscoring opponents.
