Heat forced into play-in tournament for fourth consecutive season

The Miami Heat will once again have to navigate the play-in route after a 121-95 defeat to the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday eliminated any chance of finishing among the Eastern Conference’s top six.
Head coach Erik Spoelstra acknowledged the setback. “We’re disappointed,” he said, according to the Associated Press. “We weren’t able to bring another level of competitive spirit to this.”
The latest loss guarantees Miami a play-in appearance for the fourth straight year, matching the league high shared with Atlanta and Golden State. Center Bam Adebayo had recently insisted the roster was “better than being in the play-in,” but the standings now say otherwise.
Play-in history favors Miami
Despite the repeat trip, the Heat have advanced every time the play-in has been on their schedule. Last season, they won two road contests as the No. 10 seed to claim the eighth playoff spot. One year earlier, they emerged from the play-in and ultimately reached the NBA Finals.
This season’s regular-season record against other Eastern Conference playoff clubs stands at 13-20, leaving Spoelstra to conclude, “We have to rise to the level of the competition. That’s the bottom line.”
Current play-in landscape
Miami is the first East team officially locked into the play-in. The 76ers, Magic and Hornets remain in contention for the remaining positions. In the Western Conference, the Clippers, Trail Blazers and Warriors have secured play-in berths, with the Suns expected to join them.
The format is unchanged: the seventh seed hosts the eighth seed, while the ninth seed hosts the tenth. Winners grab playoff spots; losers either face elimination or head home.
Miami “know the drill,” but the franchise had hoped to bypass this round. Instead, the Heat must attempt another postseason run the hard way.
