The New York Knicks were the only club to hold discussions with Milwaukee when the Bucks briefly gauged the trade market for two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo during the summer, according to reporting by Jake Fischer of The Stein Line.
Brooklyn had long viewed itself as a serious contender should Antetokounmpo become available, but league sources now tell Fischer the Nets are no longer considered a leading destination. The franchise is instead prioritizing a premium selection in the 2026 draft, hoping to identify a young cornerstone rather than assemble an immediate championship roster that would appeal to Antetokounmpo.
New York’s lineup is regarded as closer to title contention if Antetokounmpo were added, yet multiple executives question whether the Knicks possess enough trade assets to satisfy Milwaukee. Fischer reports the forward told at least one Bucks teammate in the offseason that a deal with New York felt “close,” though talks between the two teams ultimately stalled.
Other potential suitors
Atlanta Hawks: The Hawks could headline an offer with the 2026 first-round pick acquired from New Orleans, a selection projected to carry strong lottery odds. Club officials have repeatedly insisted they will not move that pick, but sources believe Atlanta would have to revisit the stance if Antetokounmpo formally hits the market.
San Antonio Spurs: Antetokounmpo’s U.S. agent, Alex Saratsis, has held multiple conversations with the Spurs about a possible front-office role over the years. Despite that connection, San Antonio has shown no willingness to part with recent top prospects Dylan Harper or Stephon Castle, a position that could limit its ability to compete for the star forward.
Golden State Warriors: In past negotiations for various players, Golden State has resisted packaging both Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski and has never seriously discussed trading Draymond Green. Fischer writes that the Warriors would reconsider those positions if Milwaukee makes Antetokounmpo available.
Milwaukee has not signaled renewed interest in dealing its franchise player, but front offices across the league are preparing contingencies in case the Bucks revisit trade scenarios closer to the 2026 draft.
