Former NBA guard Damon Jones pleaded not guilty Tuesday to federal charges alleging his role in a rigged poker ring and a separate sports-betting scheme.

Jones faces counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering. He was arrested in late October and is one of just three defendants named in both of the two indictments that collectively charge 30 people, according to court filings.

Prosecutors contend Jones provided gamblers with non-public information about Los Angeles Lakers player availability. In one cited instance, they say he texted a co-conspirator on Feb. 9, 2023—hours before tipoff against Milwaukee—advising a “big bet on Milwaukee tonight” after learning LeBron James would not play.

Although Jones never held an official position on the Lakers’ coaching staff, he was regularly around the team. The 47-year-old is a longtime confidant of LeBron James, having played alongside him with the Cleveland Cavaliers and later serving as a Cavaliers assistant during their championship run.

Sports bettor Marves Fairley also entered a not guilty plea. Investigators allege Fairley paid Jones about $2,500 for a tip on Anthony Davis’ status—information that ultimately proved inaccurate.

Jones was released on a $200,000 bond and may travel only within parts of Texas and New York City while the case proceeds.
